Warmwater seaweed procurement holds Children’s World Oceans Day in Bantayan, Cebu

For the sixth consecutive year, the Global Procurement Group (Warmwater Seaweed) and the FMC Cebu plant sponsored a Children’s World Ocean Day in the seaweed-growing island of Lipayran, Bantayan, Cebu.

About 350 school children of the Lipayran Elementary School, from Grades 1 to 6, participated in an interactive Marine Stewardship workshop, followed by a beach cleanup. They also received school bags and educational materials worth $1,000.

The activity was an officially recognized event of the International World Oceans Day 2017. Click here for more details on the event.

The project was spearheaded by Farley Baricuatro, Warmwater Seaweed Global Sourcing Manager, with the support of Royal Algaculture, the seaweed supplier operating in Bantayan. FMC buys cottonii and spinosum seaweed from Lipayran Island for its carrageenan processing plants in Cebu, Philippines and Rockland, Maine, USA.

Community volunteers engage grade school students in a lively workshop on marine stewardship.

Youth volunteers demonstrate to the students proper plastic waste segregation and management.

Students collect plastic refuse around the beach of Lipayran, Bantayan.
